Doctoral Practica
Kaleidoscope Counseling & Assessment is a mental health center that provides services to children, adolescents, young adults, couples, and families. The population of the Center is approximately 60% young adults/adults, and 40% children/adolescents, with opportunities to work with couples and families. Kaleidoscope also provides group therapy to children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of diagnoses, including Autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and social skills needs. Practicum placements are 12-15 hours per week.
The following is a list of activities in which practicum students are expected to participate:
Delivery of psychotherapy services to clients, including individual, family, and group therapy with a minimum of 6 clients per week (often 6 clients plus 1 group)
Individual Supervision: minimum of 1 hr/week with individual supervisor
Group Supervision: 2 hrs/week; this will consist of case reviews as well as more structured seminars by professionals in the community; students will also be expected to make one presentation in group seminar on a topic of their choice. Group supervision meets Tuesdays 9-11.
Other practicum hours are expected to be filled by administrative duties (such as progress note writing, case management, and community outreach).
Students must have at least two afternoon/evenings (or Saturday) available for clients.
Students are required to carry student liability insurance at the time of practicum.
Preferred applicant qualities:
Applicants are not required to have prior experience to complete a placement at the center.
Applicants should have interest in learning systemic approaches combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Applicants should have an interest in working with children and families as well as adults.
Preference is given to applicants who have taken or are enrolled in the Family Therapy and Group Therapy courses.
